Tashi Delek and Welcome to
Pema Ts'al Sakya Monastic Institute!

About Us

The Crown Jewel of Pokhara
Pema Ts’al Sakya Monastic Institute is a thriving modern monastic community. This institute is dedicated wholly to the education of young Buddhist monks and the preservation of the ancient Sakya Buddhist traditions. Pema Ts’al is home to many young students from the inaccessible and impoverished Himalayan region, Tibetan Refugee and Nepali Buddhist communities. Pema Ts’al is truly a jewel in the rough, shining brightly in contrast to the hardships of the region.

Introduction
PTSMI is a non-profit educational monastery registered to the Nepali government. It was established on 13th March 1999 in Kathmandu, Nepal. It was shifted later to its present location in February 2002. Presently, it has 80 students plus 15 teaching & non-teaching staff members. The students are studying in the college & school levels.

Foundation
PTSMI was founded by the Venerable Khenpo Lama Pema Wangdak la and the Venerable Lama Kunga Dhondup la under the kind guidance, blessings and consent of His Holiness the Sakya Trizin. Ven Lama Kunga Dhondup also serves as the principal as he leads young monks through their journey here at the monastery.

Aim
Our primary aim is to prepare Tibetan Buddhist Sakya monks for future leadership by combining traditional monastic training along with a modern education.

Education
PTSMI provides a comprehensive educational program for all our young monks that has been fully sanctioned by the Nepali government where they are educated in Tibetan, English, Nepali, Science, Social Studies and Maths. After completing both their class 8 studies and the Cycle of Training in Monastic Rituals, our senior students then progress to formal Buddhist Philosophical studies known as Shedra. These young men will continue their monastic college studies for a total of nine to twelve years, after which they will receive the title of Shastri or Acharya. Pema Ts’al has well-qualified and dedicated teaching staff members. Our current Shedra Khenpo is Venerable Kunsang Thrinley la who is a great scholar and an excellent teacher of monastic discipline from Dzongsar Institute for Higher Tibetan Buddhist Studies, India.
